Kanye West doesn’t know how to do small, so whenever the rapper unveils a new project it’s almost always on the biggest platform possible. That explains why his new “short art film,” “Cruel Summer,” will debut on the fabulous Palm Beach in Cannes, France during the Cannes Film Festival.

The hush-hush movie, inspired by the upcoming all-star G.O.O.D. Music album
 of the same name, will world premiere on May 23 and remain open to the public for two days afterward. It is being screened out of competition in Cannes amid the world-famous film fest.

And, this being Kanye, the project is described as, “a fusion of short film and art installation … an immersive ’7 screen experience’ for the eyes and ears unlike anything West has attempted before.” Among those listed as starring in the film are comedian Aziz Ansari, Kid Cudi, Lebanese actress Razane Jammal (“Djinn”) and Palestinian actor Ali Suliman (“The Kingdom”). Yeezy is listed as the producer, writer and director of the effort, based on a screenplay by Elon Rutberg, who was the associate director of the Throne’s “N—-s in Paris” video. The co-director is Alexandre Moors, who worked with West on “Runaway” as well as the “Paris” clip.

Kanye and Cudi were spotted filming scenes for the movie
 earlier this year in the middle eastern nation of Qatar, but little or no information has emerged about the subject matter or plot of the project. Expectations are high given the over-the-top look and feel of ‘Ye’s last mini-flick, 2010′s “Runaway.” Click here for ticket information for the screenings.

Guinness spokesperson explains why they refused to recognize a White Stripes show as ‘the shortest concert of all time.’

Over the years, Jack White has taken umbrage with overzealous radio programmers, the Internet and, uh, Jason Stollsteimer (to name just a few) but in the new issue of Interview magazine, he lashes out at a new foe: The folks at Guinness World Records.

Yes, in what could only be described as the latest step in his ongoing transformation into the music world’s foremost eccentric — sorry, Kanye — White has lashed out at the venerable record-keeping institution, calling them “a very elitist organization” after they refused to acknowledge the White Stripes’ one-note performance in Newfoundland (seen in their 2010 doc “Under Great White Northern Lights”) as “the shortest music concert ever.”

“I was thinking that afterwards we could contact the Guinness World Records people and see if we could get the record for the shortest concert of all time. So we did it, but ultimately, they turned us down,” White tells astronaut Buzz Aldrin (for real) in the Interview piece. “[They're] a very elitist organization. There’s nothing scientific about what they do. They just have an office full of people who decide what is a record and what isn’t … so something like the shortest concert of all time, they didn’t think [it] was interesting enough to make it a record. I don’t know why they get to decide that, but, you know, they own the book.”

Well, yes, they do own the book … and, as it turns out, the Stripes’ Newfoundland concert was featured in the 2009 edition of it, as a spokesperson for Guinness World Records pointed out to MTV News on Thursday (May 17). Of course, they’d subsequently remove the notation in later editions, though it had little to do with elitism and more to do with the simple fact that Guinness had no way of qualifying what actually counted as a performance.

“We received a large volume of applications from bands and performers seeking to beat this record. We got an influx of individuals claiming that simply appearing on stage was enough to qualify them for this record,” the spokesperson wrote in an email to MTV News. “It became increasingly difficult for us to measure this objectively (for example, how many members of the crowd need to be able to see the performer before they disappear off stage?)

“The nature of competing to make something the ‘shortest’ by its very nature trivializes the activity being carried out, and Guinness World Records has been forced to reject many claims of this kind,” the spokesperson continued. “As such, we have closed record categories for similar designations such as the shortest song, shortest poem, and also the record of shortest concert currently in question.”

Of course, the spokesperson was quick to add that Guinness World Records “admires the band and we encourage them to attempt any of the 40,000 active records currently housed in our database.” And knowing White, we’re pretty sure he’ll take them up on that offer. Soon.

Rap superstar Wiz Khalifa will perform his new single “Work Hard, Play Hard” for the first time on television at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards.

Khalifa joins chart-topping indie-pop group Fun. as the second performer announced for the annual Golden Popcorn-fest. “Work Hard, Play Hard” is the debut single from the Pittsburgh rapper’s hotly awaited second studio album, O.N.I.F.C., which will hit stores in August.

In addition to Khalifa, several of the biggest stars in film have been added to the lineup of presenters for the big show. “That’s My Boy” co-stars Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg, “Gossip Girl” diva Leighton Meester and “Perks of Being a Wallflower” castmates Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller will join already-announced presenters Emma Stone, Andrew Garfield, Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Mila Kunis and Mark Wahlberg at the Russell Brand-hosted event.

Watson, Lerman and Miller will also be on hand during the Movie Awards pre-show to debut the first “Perks” trailer. “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” based on the popular Stephen Chbosky novel of the same name, tells the story of introverted high school freshman Charlie (Lerman) as he slowly comes out of his shell thanks to new friends, siblings Sam (Watson) and Patrick (Miller).

The 2012 MTV Movie Awards will air live on MTV from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California, on Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Star of ‘Terminator: Rise of the Machines’ has not been heard from since May 9, his wife told L.A. officials.

“Terminator: Rise of the Machines” actor Nick Stahl has been reported missing. Los Angeles law enforcement officials confirmed to TMZ that Stahl’s wife, Rose Murphy, reported her husband missing on Monday, saying that the last time she saw the 32-year-old was on May 9.

Sources told the website that Stahl had been displaying some erratic behavior recently and was allegedly spending time in the Skid Row area of Los Angeles. The source also expressed concern that the actor might have become involved in some questionable activities.

This is not the first time, however, that those close to the actor have expressed concern over his well-being. Stahl’s wife filed papers with the LA County Superior Court back in February asking a judge to limit her husband’s access to their 2-year-old daughter Marlo due to his alleged drug and alcohol abuse. She also claimed that she and Stahl were no longer living together.

There has been no word from Stahl’s reps regarding his whereabouts, but Stahl’s wife has been relatively active on her Twitter account, posting a general thank you for support early Wednesday (May 16). “Thank you for kind words,” she tweeted.

A quick look at Stahl’s Twitter account shows that the actor has been inactive since May 1, but that he and Murphy might have been working through their problems since the actor tweeted on April 26 that they were not actually separated.

Stahl made his big-screen debut back in 1993 opposite Mel Gibson in “The Man Without a Face.” Since then, he’s appeared in several major studio films, inclduing “The Thin Red Line,” “Disturbing Behavior” and “Sin City.” His most recent role is in the VOD-released “388 Arletta Avenue” opposite Devon Sawa.

Lupe Fiasco tweets that he’s not on this year’s bill, despite an announcement to the contrary.

Hip-hop’s premier music festival is back. On Tuesday, Guerilla Union held a press conference to reveal its lineup of hip-hop all-stars for Rock the Bells 2012. Freestyler extraordinaire Supernatural delivered the list of performers one-by-one with an impromptu rap, rattling off names like Wiz Khalifa, Kid Cudi, Nas, J. Cole and Mac Miller, as well as veteran acts like Missy Elliott, Timbaland and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

Lupe Fiasco’s name also appears on the festival’s flyer, but on Wednesday morning (May 16), the Chi-Town lyricist tweeted that despite what was printed, he would not be in attendance this year. “Not doing Rock The Bellz…thats a typo fam and friends…,” he wrote.

For the first time in nine years, Rock the Bells will expand its daylong festival to two days. The first show will take place August 18 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California. Last year’s three-stage setup forced fans to choose between their favorite acts, who would often perform simultaneously. “We had quite a few complaints about Mobb Deep fans having to choose between Mobb Deep and Nas,” Guerilla Union boss Chang Weisberg said as an example. “We tried to deliver three stages, but it didn’t work out. So the correction? Two stages, two days, one event.”

RTB will hit the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, on August 25 and 26 and then the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, on September 1 and 2. Coincidentally, the East Coast show falls on the very same weekend as Jay-Z’s recently announced Made in America multi-genre music festival in Philadelphia. Hov promises close to 30 eclectic acts in the fields of rock, hip-hop, R&B, Latin and dance music. The Made in America lineup hasn’t been announced yet, but already, the RTB bill is ripe with diverse rap talent. 2 Chainz, Tyga, Kendrick Lamar, Slick Rick, E-40, Too Short and A$AP Rocky will all be in attendance.

The announcement event wrapped up with performances by DJ Quik and Bone Thugs, who took the stage and rocked a few of their many classics, leaving fans ready for the main course this summer. Fans should check RockTheBells.net for venue and ticket information.

‘You know, you can’t trust anyone in this business,’ pop star tells GQ.

It’s not always easy being Justin Bieber. At least that’s what the latest profile about the teen superstar in GQ suggests. While Bieber does open up a bit about his personal life, he remains mostly guarded, sharing very little about what goes on when the cameras aren’t rolling or he’s not in the recording studio.

“I mean, I keep my guard up a lot, because you know, you can’t trust anyone in this business,” Bieber says in the June issue of the magazine. “That’s what’s sad. You can’t trust anybody. I learned the hard way.”

The article notes that Bieber seems to mostly go from his house to his car to the studio, with little time for spontaneity. While he remained tight-lipped in the interview, he confesses that he does on occasion let his guard down. But even then, he tries to never let anything get out of hand. “For me, it’s just like, I like to be in control of myself,” he said. “I mean, I’ve had a beer, like, before. … But I never get out of control.”

Bieber seemed most relaxed during the interview when his pricey new car, a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, is sent to him at the studio. With his friends, handlers and associates on hand, he proclaims to everyone that they should head into the studio with him and celebrate by listening to some of his new music. “I’m 18 years old and I’m a swaggy adult!” he says. “Come on, swaggy bros!”

That swagger is noted later on in the article when Bieber says, “I’ve never made a bad song.”

Another candid Bieber moment comes later on. When hanging in the studio after working on a track for Believe, which drops next month, one of his pals bashes his onetime crush Kim Kardashian, and he quickly comes to her defense, saying, “People say she doesn’t do anything; she actually does do stuff. … She works hard.”

When MTV News sat down with Bieber to premiere his “Boyfriend” video recently, he told us that he always tries to be the best he can be. “I think it’s about getting better at everything and never stopping. You can be the best but you can never stop growing,” he shared, before noting that he always enters interviews fully aware that anything he says could be taken out of context.

“Right now, I have to think two seconds in advance, like, ‘What am I gonna say?’ But I try my best to moderate what I’m gonna say, to say it so I don’t make any mistakes,” he admitted. “So people aren’t, like, twisting my words.”

Experts weigh in on whether Spears will find success with her new judging gig.

The rumors had been swirling for months, and now, according to reports, the pop princess herself, Britney Spears, will be joining the judging panel on “The X Factor,” landing a $15 million deal for one season.

Yet, after 15 years in the public eye, seven studio albums and more than 100 million albums sold worldwide, many are wondering: Is “The X Factor” the right career move for Spears?

“I think it is a good move, actually,” Entertainment Weekly writer Tanner Stransky told MTV News. “I think she has so many people on her team watching what she’s doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it’s the right move right now.”

This new role certainly has many advantages. It keeps Spears in the public eye while keeping her close to her family, and it will most likely bring in the big ratings that “X Factor” and Simon Cowell are hoping for. Yet there are some experts who are a little wary of Spears taking a spot on the panel, since over the years, the pop star has been noticeably withdrawn from press, rarely giving on-camera interviews.

“I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she’s been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled,” Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard, said. “And there can be uncontrollable moments on ‘The X Factor,’ and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome.”

Stransky agreed and believes that, while Spears is judging the contestants, viewers will ultimately be judging her.

“Everyone is going to take a close look at her and pay attention to what she says,” Stransky said. “She’s sort of been so managed on her interviews in the past five years, it’s risky.”

But Spears’ loyal fanbase feels that putting Spears in an environment where anything can happen is actually a good thing, and will show a whole different side of the pop star.

“That’s part of the excitement of her being on this: It’s unscripted,” said Jordan Miller, webmaster for Spears’ biggest fan site, BreatheHeavy.com. “We are so used to her reading cue cards and kind of being controlled in that way, so for her to break out of that and to do something that’s stepping outside her comfort zone, I think it’s a great step for her, career-wise, and for her as a person. I think she’s going to do really good. I think she’s confident.”

And confidence is key when judging a singing competition, but so is experience — which Spears has in spades. For years, fans have listened to her chart-topping music and have seen her on tour, but now they’re ready to connect with the star on a new level.

“I think the overall consensus is that people are really excited to see Britney do something new and be able to connect with her a couple times a week on national television,” Miller said. “It’s exciting for fans to see that she’s going to be able to mentor these contestants, because like it or not, Britney does have the ‘X Factor,’ so it’s going to be great to see how she can transcend this into more singers and inspire other people.”

Baton Rouge rapper dodges a life sentence in 2009 murder case.

After a week of testimony and deliberation in a murder trial stemming from a 2009 case, jurors in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, found rapper Lil Boosie (born Torrence Hatch) not guilty of a first-degree murder charge on Friday (May 11). The rapper was facing life in prison if convicted.

Boosie is currently serving an eight-year sentence for non-related drug charges, but WBRZ reported that the 29-year-old was able to beat seemingly insurmountable odds in a murder trial in which he was accused of ordering primary witness Michael “Marlo Mike” Louding to murder Terry Boyd. The 35-year-old was shot to death in his home in Baton Rouge in October 2009.

On the third day of testimony in the Boosie trial, 19-year-old Louding took the stand and backtracked on his previous confession of being hired to kill Boyd. He claimed instead that he had never confessed to law enforcement about the murder, adding that he was with Hatch and getaway driver Adrienne Pitman at the rapper’s house on the night of the shooting.

The prosecution came under fire for using Boosie’s violent lyrics to incriminate him in the case, even pointing to Louding’s tattoo of an AK-47, with the script “Yo Boosie Who’s Next?” as proof that the two had conspired. Meanwhile, the defense aimed to paint a picture of Boosie as an artist who let too many strangers into his inner circle without knowing their true intentions.

On Wednesday morning, an IT specialist took the stand to testify about the contents of the Baton Rouge rapper’s computer. The expert pinpointed a photo of a tattoo parlor, which was related to the investigation, but no details were given on how his testimony might have affected the case. Throughout the trial, several officers were questioned, including one who revealed that Boosie was not considered a suspect until his name was brought up during Louding’s confession.

While prosecutors argued that Louding’s admissions and cell phone records were proof that he committed the crime, Boosie’s defense attorneys countered that the confession was a lie, prompted by hours of interrogation.
